How to Select the Perfect Rash Guard

These days you can purchase rash guards in many places including online or in brick and mortar stores. Sometimes it can be hard to figure out exaclty what you need. Here are a few guidelines to get you started looking in the right direction.

Step 1
The first thing to think about when you're ready to purchase a rash guard is its intended use. Are you into surfing? Will this rash guard be used in more abrasive sports like volleyball, MMA, grappling or kiteboarding? Knowing which sport you want to wear it for is important because it will help you decide whether or not you want to go with a thicker fabric for better rash protection or a thinner one that will be lighter weight, but still give you the maximum in UV protection.

Long sleeves will protect your skin from both UV rays, (getting sunburned), as well as from irriation or rashes better than short sleeve ones. Remember, if you select a short sleeve shirt, you will need to apply sunscreen to your arms frequently. The long sleeves stop UV rays and protect your entire arms. If the rash guard you are looking at contains anything less than 150 SPF, look elsewhere.

Step 2
You should also examine the way the shirt is sewn. A rash guard with a high neck is perfect for keeping the sun’s rays off sensitive areas like the back of the neck and preventing painful sunburns. Side panels are also a good idea, since they allow for the most freedom of movement and a better fit.

Step 3
Another think to think about is who will be wearing the rash guard. If you are buying for your kids, you will obviously be looking at smaller sizes. It is a good idea to find a company that caters to each age group or gender specifically. A rash guard that is meant for a small adult will not fit a child properly and can leave gaps where a sunburn could occur. Likewise, rash guards created for men are not going to fit a women’s curves properly and could be very uncomfortable. Instead, look for items that were designed with the user in mind. A reputable store will sell cuts of rash guards for men, women and children.

Getting a good fit is essential if you want your rash guard to do its job. For true protection against minor abrasions and irritations from rashed, you want your guard to fit very tight against your body. If it is too loose, the fabric could rub the skin, causing more rashing. Most companies will offer a size chart to help you choose the correct size, but you need to make sure that you measure correctly. It is best if someone else measures you since doing it yourself can be difficult.

Step 4
Be sure to select a design or color that you like. If you buy a shirt in a color that you don't love or a design that you hate, you probably won’t wear it. All that hot new protective technology doesn’t help at all if it gets stuffed in the back of your closet!

Buying a rash guard shirt is a great way to go if you are looking for the latest in UV and general skin protection, but it helps to know the basics of buying one. Follow the tips given above and you won't go wrong!
